Know Better

It all comes down
To what we know or don't know
And if it were just a matter of ignorance
Then we should be putting up
Walls around the globe

But no...

'Cause one thing is for sure
We know better...
The weather might change
But the sun stays the same
We know better...
No matter how you hedge your bet
The second you step into the river
It becomes entirely impossible
To not get your feet wet
We know better...

The bliss we feel
Is just the risk we take
To numb us to the effect
Of our mortality rate
Nations rage
And at the end of the day
Slumber away in their coffins
Of clamorous desperation

And hardhearted orphans
Fall victim to a recession
Of long ago spoken oracles
In their ancestors' possession
Slavery courses through their veins
And the chains become a comfort
Callused creatures of habit
With the features to match
A rabid sensation for havoc
And clay feet that only move backwards

We know better...

But doing is another thing--
"Whatever gets me richer quickest"
"Man, what I wouldn't give to get a ring"
Power hungry, pleasure seeking
Forgotten lessons learned east of Eden
Arrogant and seated on a throne
Made of leaven
Stole the keys to the cellar
Foolishly hoping to find
A backdoor to Heaven...

And we're no better
