July 1st 2007, Visit To The Somme
A green, open, swollen sea of fields,
Lies peacefully under summer sun.
A turf mask on a tortured face.
Trees and bushes huddle in lonely fear,
Cloaking scars of ordnance past.
Small piles of failed darkness await collection
On the long through road to Amiens.
Shrines to heroes and the unnamed abound
Hoping to appease nurtures still shocked breast.
And in the autumn with the poppy past its bloom
We make a show of remembering
What cold hands could vindicate again.
