Julie’s sonata

Len Lewis 1943 (Port of Spain, Trinidad)

Every time I see your playful face
The welcome of your fluent smile,
The essence from your tempting brow,
The inkling in your stylish eyes,
Remind me of that perfect day
I first set patent eyes upon you.
For the music in the regal way
you stepped that day,
Like a carousel of seamless harmony,
has never stopped playing;

Every time I hear your swish
Yah melody of elastic glee
gives birth to a lively sonata
That I greet each day to hear.
For, as you have freely asserted,
no one can truthfully tell you
That I don't love you

Now, every time I think of you
I ‘m rinsed and rinsed again
in the perfume of your sparkling waters
rushing to obscure my unruly valour
Like one quickening cyclone of vapour
Rising from the depths of my inborn fires
I must be a romantic
