Into the Void, Act I: Fall Apart, Chapter 5 - Waking Dreams

I've had this dream before.
To dream is euphoria,
But waking is agony.
You're torn away from my arms
By the opening of my eyelids.
I close them again
To try and bring you back to me,
But you're out of my life
Until I sleep again.
But I'm so afraid.
Afraid to sleep,
Afraid to dream,
For fear of waking again.

When you were taken from me
Leaving behind
Only borrowed memories
Of black clouds reflected in your eyes.
Half-life decay of all things good.
Half-truths supplementing the lies.
Half-sure of what's only half-understood.
Half-erased recollections of all we were,
All we had, what we took.
When you were taken from me.

Ever since I've been reflecting
On all the things that I have learned
About taking what I had for granted.
All that I lost I had not earned.
I got exactly what I had coming,
Finally received my due.
Everything that I deserved
Manifest in losing you.

I broke your heart,
And then you broke mine.
All my unkindness
Returned in kind.

But I had hoped you'd take my name
When I offered you my heart.
Yet somehow I'm the one to blame
For when we broke apart.

Instead you only took my pride,
Depriving me from the start
Of the hope that lived inside
Every time that you'd depart.

I am a university student from Texas, and a bit of a closet-poet. Perhaps I should keep it in the closet, but I am interested in getting feedback on some of my poetry. Let me know what you think! I used to write a lot of poetry when I was a little kid, but eventually lost interest as I got older. I started writing poetry again as a form of art-therapy during a really hard time in my life. I like to try to experiment with different styles and strange metaphors. Understandably, this can make some of my poetry less accessible at times, but occasionally I feel like it pays off. more…
