I'm Not Sad

...because "one day I'll miss out
on Christmas and the new year"
or because "one day I'll never see the sunrise
or hear the morning birds again."

And I'm not sad at the thought of darkness either.

(The nothingness everywhere
was here before I was born
and has stayed long after.)

I am sad
because of "the way things are,"
because of "the moment when I see her smile
for the first time,"
because of the moment when she says
"I love you."

This is a world that clings to habit,
a world that drinks and smokes
to avoid the thought of an irreparable truth
that comes at the sight of happiness.

(The traumatic truth that every start
is the start of something tragic.)
