I Looked For You

I looked for you this morning at the crack of dawn
The sun was there to meet me but you were simply gone

I looked for you last springtime in the cabbage rose
The scent was there to greet me but you were in repose

I looked for you this noontime by the light of day
The crowd was there to meet me but you were far away

I looked for you last summer on the coastal sand
The heat was there to greet me but you were off the land

I looked for you this evening at the faint of night
The moon was there to meet me but you were out of sight

I looked for you last autumn up the naked tree
The leaf was there to greet me but you were floating free

I looked for you this midnight in the depth of black
The dark was there to meet me but you were never back

I looked for you last winter on the frozen snow
The cold was there to greet me but you were the no-show
