I Couldn't Hold On

We missed each other on the road somewhere between I love you and I don't care.
The smiles, the looks aren't there anymore,
And I can't remember how it felt before.
I remember the laughter and the tears,
But now I'm meeting only deaf ears.
I need to talk and you need time.
I'm ready to scream, and you want it in mime.
And in the quiet moments made for eyes and hands,
You want to listen to hard-rock bands.
We can't seem to find a common ground,
When I seem lost, you seem found.
We tried to make this more than a one-time fling,
But what once had meaning, doesn't mean anything.
You're on your way to some new sight, and
I can't hold your image in the middle of the night.
So maybe we'd best just go our own ways,
One of us goes and one of us stays.
We pick up the pieces of the times that have been,
And look for ways to begin again.
I can't love an illusion
And I can't hold a vow.
I need you here,
But you're not here now.
Tomorrow you'll come
and I will be gone.
The night was too much.
I couldn't hold on.
