I Can Still Smell the Popcorn

She stood behind the counter
at the local theater,
and I took the tickets at the door.
We met just like in the movies,
and our hearts began to throb.
The times were so much simpler then,
we dreamed of goin' to Disneyland.
People crowded into our building,
expecting a great love story.
The tickets all were sold,
and the seats filled each night.
But the only thought on our minds was quitting time.
After the show, we carried ourselves
out back to my car,
where we began to lose our innocence
in the moonlight.
We knew so little then. We were so young.
I was seventeen at the movies,
and I can still smell the popcorn.
