Heaven's Door

Heaven's Door

There's someone who'll be waiting, when I cross that crystal shore
he's been there for a while you know, sitting by the door.

Like when I was a young lad and he'd walk with me to school
then wander home and rest ~ in the daily cool.
But when the closing bell would sound and we'd burst forth with a roar
he'd been there for a while you know, sitting by the door.

When I was hurt, he licked my wounds ~ and comforted by his lean.
When I was glad, he rejoiced with me ~ yet never made a scene.
When I was too busy and shut him out ~ loaded down with chores,
he'd been waiting patiently, on my bedroom floor.

Who would have thought a dog could teach me all the things he would?
His love, loyalty and devotion; I always understood.

His tail would wag with just a look
And even if I could, I wouldn't trade my days with him
For, he embodied what's good.

It's been some years, I know, since we've hiked the Cedar River shores
But one thing I am certain of,
He'll be sitting there ~ right by Heaven's Door.
