Getting Wings
Neil McLeod 1947 (Oxford)
Getting Wings
For A.J. Ramseyer and Evan Garcia at their Eagle Court of Honor
May 3rd 2014, 2pm, Village Chapel
In my mind I see the (Scout) Master,
Before whom I took my oath,
And the den leader who taught me,
I well remember both,
And learning how to roll my scarf
Sew patches and such things,
These filter back in memory,
Now as I get my wings.
I stood straight at attention
When the colors were marched in,
My arm up smartly to salute,
As our Pledge we begin.
And we promised for God and country
To ever do our best,
And helping others at all times,
That still remains my quest.
I recall how when camping
We would set up tent and fly,
My father overseeing us
With a watchful eye,
Ready to advise as we'd adjust
The guy line strings.
I still recall these moments
Now as I get my wings.
At the courts of honor
When I advanced through the ranks,
My mother stood there proudly
As I gave her my thanks.
On her brag ribbon necklace,
I'd add another pin,
But for all she's done I cannot tell
Where I should begin.
I recall the endless projects
When we all pulled together,
To help our fellow troup-mates out
As they climbed up the ladder:
Tracking down Merit Badge Counselors
Now there's a thought that zings,
You had to get those blue cards signed
If you're to get your wings.
For miles we'd lug a backpack,
Hiking in, then out again,
And every body's praying
That it isn't going to rain.
We'd even backpack in the snow,
What memories that brings,
Or brave the climb at Philmont,
That helped us earn our wings
And now the course is over,
A new one lies ahead
But my commitment shall not waver
From that promise I first said.
I will take place in society
Amongst paupers or kings
Proud to be an Eagle Scout
Who has earned his wings.
(Scout Oath
On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight)
