For Diane

You touched my life,
And laid sweet golden threads of joy within its tapestry.
Your grace, your presence and your love
Became the shining beacons for my hopes of happiness.

My soul, though grey with one great spot of black to mark its shame,
Still hoped that love might wash away that scar.
And each day since, as far as in it lay,
Has tried to be a whiter soul than on the day before.

My love for you lives on,
For love may live when all about it dies.
You are my heart's true love and will be so
'Til death at last shall softly close my eyes.

But trust is dead, my heart by disillusion torn.
The sweetness of our years now bears a bitter taste.
That which you seek comes only at a price:
Our love discarded for convenience sake
