First Date

What is it about a first date
that makes you feel the way you do?
You wonder, will they measure up
and how will they rate you?

You start your day out normally
until the point comes when
suddenly you realize
this could be more than just friends.

Then you start to anticipate
the things you’ll say and do
but all the planning in your head
can never prepare you.

Nothing will ever work out
any of the thousand ways you’ve planned
A turn of phrase, a look, a touch,
out the window goes the plan
But life would be so boring
if everything could be planned
Spontaneity’s the spice of life
flow with Fate’s gentle hand.
As the night progresses
you try to be yourself
but at times you feel awkward
and wonder, “Did I look as foolish as I felt?”

Your date senses something
from your look
and makes you comfortable again.
So silently you thank them
and think at worst, I’ve made a friend.

Now things are going well
you both are having fun
things ease up as you relax
to bad the date is done.
Now the date is over
you’re standing at the door
you share a sweet and gentle kiss
and both leave wanting more.
