Finding the Way

I wish I'd been less reticent
Through all those fallow years;
My rugged spirit held my pain,
As footsteps, stumbling in the rain,
Might rob the path of destiny.

The air I breathed seemed poisonous;
And, blighted by my fears,
I could not grasp the fleeting days,
Or sing the songs of sunshine rays
Which tried to reach my emptiness.

My faith was what sustained my heart
And kept my soul at peace;
I sought for anchors from the past,
The kind of love which holds you fast
And seeks to quell that bitterness.

I know I'll see much better days
When I might learn to love;
I've held back from the dance of life,
But, sifting still through wrong and right,
I start to find my measured steps.
