Ferris Wheel, Jan. 1

Ann M. Votaw

Like an iris plugged in
and shocked to release its guarded fires.
Its whites and yellows
that in human form
show themselves in only love or fury.

So turns the wheel on the year's first morning.
As futile as a pre-Rumplestiltskin tower night.
Spinning for a gold August sunrise.
