Fear.

The fear within me is terrifying.
I can feel my heart pounding out of my chest.
I can feel the heat burning in my stomach.
I don't even want to go back to sleep.
How can a nightmare cause  such a reaction?
How can it feel so utterly real?
Why do I give it power over me?
People say we can change how we dream.
Oh how I wish that I knew how.
It awakens me, yet the fear paralyzes me.
Allowing me to be tortured.
Until I can wake up and run.
Let me think of happier things.
Maybe I can sleep in a few hours.
Our demons always lurking in the dark.
Waiting for our dreams, so they can hitch a ride.
To try to kill us with their never ending nightmares.
Trying to steal our breath as we fight for a peaceful sleep.
