Fear of what poems are saying

they come for him
drag him from the hovel
in which he hides like a beast
demand from him words
he keeps secure in his head
words locked in boxes
the ones that dance
across the lines of his poems
the rhythms and rhymes
he guards with his life
against the enemies of thought
who fear what he writes

who question the meaning behind
hummingbirds hovering above
the nectar of bluebells
what does it mean they ask
who are the hummingbirds
who are the bluebells
what is the nectar
but he refuses to confess

now confined to the dark cell
he stuffs his hungry mouth
with crumpled poems
that cannot fly away
reading them first
with squinting eyes
blurring away the imagery
with a nightfall of tears
