Dreaming with Eyes Open

A dreamer Ive always been,
always falling short of being someones friend.
All of my days are found living a rebelious way,
when I was told no it became the nature of my day.
For a moment in time I once thought Jesus was just a joke,
so tight was my binding hateful yoke.
It wasn't something I wanted to be,
but its what became of my soul & me.
I always wanted to be nothing but the best,
but first I was to live through every life test.
My shadow became my best friend,
my thoughts with me they wouldn't pretend.
When others started talking,
my mind would go walking.
Why listen to what doesn't matter,
when everyone has scattered.
Forty-nine years I've lived looking through these eyes,
cold & lonely days when dark clouds covered the skies.
Now its ignorance I hear on the television,
another moment in life before my vision.
Cable news stations are like students in a classroom,
they know nothing about our hearts cold broken dark room.
If they were for real,
the hungry would have tonight's meal,
the poor would have a better deal,
& the lost they would feel.
But its all about he said she said,
& no one caring about the child without tonight's bed.
Understanding why a person is the way they are,
is knowing that each one is like a far away night time star.
Shining bright for one another to see,
knowing that Jesus' love sets us free.
