Dirt And Flowers

We throw dirt on the living and flowers on the dead.
Although it's unforgiving
the practice is widespread.

We put off till tomorrow what we can do today.
Although kismet we borrow
the practice doesn't pay.

We vote for politicians and overlook their breach.
Although there's admonition
the practice should impeach.

We build castles in the sky and furnish them with dreams.
Although we want "apple-pie"
the practice fails our schemes.

We falter with the promise that ought to be our bond.
Although there's "doubting Thomas"
the practice will abscond.

We often take for granted what we can't live without.
Although often supplanted
the practice raises doubt.

We throw dirt on the living and flowers on the dead.
Although we have misgiving
the practice is gainsaid.
