It's like a shock absorber
that's plainly made-to-order.

Denial of fearfulness can be masked as cheerfulness.
It can also find retreat
in cold, sweaty hands and feet.

Denial of affection can conceal dereliction.
A pretentious resplendence
can designate dependence.

Denial of resentment can be cloaked in contentment.
A "righteous" indignation
can be an indication.

Denial of our demise can hide in years we surmise.
Concerns for longevity
can be found in levity.

Denial of reality is a "siege mentality."
As we whistle in the dark
it gives courage when life's stark
