College

Going to college,
first feeling excited,
no uniforms, no rules, no boundaries,
endless freeedom, buffets of food to eat,
all a facade,
after a while, everything changed

Picked a major, nursing,
out of all the rest,
thought it would be best
learning the hard way that it isn't
Could have picked art,
it was something I was good at,
but in the real world there's no such thing
as creativity, or following your heart,
only rolling over and playing it safe

Had to hurry and register
for classes that fill fast
time in them goes slow,
sitting through long lectures,
professors speaking in monotone,
can't wait to go home,
but oh wait, tests to study for,
papers to write, homework, and more

Caffeine's my best friend
gets me through the night
through hours of studying,
writing papers up to ten pages,
exams, midterms, finals,
no such thing as free time

Walking around campus wondering
I paid thousands of dollars in tuition for this?
scholarships from good grades in high school,
financial aid, loans I don't have to pay back now, cool,
refunds are my only compensation,
once, twice, three times a semester,
gets me through the year,
finances I won't have to fear,
for a while,
but when it runs out,
I could try to get a job, but no one will hire me,
I'll have to be without,
I'm screwed

College
I'll be glad when I'm done with you,
already made a year and singing this song,
thought you would be good for me,
I was dead wrong
