Christmas Sacrifice

Christmas trees line the wall
Like soldiers on parade
Green and alert;
They stand there and wait.
We pick the brawny one
And drag him home,
Tied to the top of our van.
We pull him into the house
Arms raised we secure him
in the corner near the door,
Giving him only water to drink.
In that room he stays with
A single blanket to cover his feet.
We dress him in gaudy decor
And top him with a star.
Surrendering his pride
He tries his best to look alive.
Knowing he will be lucky to survive
Until Christmas is done.
