Christchurch Devastated

Another earthquake struck Christchurch at one,
Wrecking the city with the damage done,
The inner area tall buildings and all,
Collapsed and folded the big and the small.

People were trapped with many lives lost,
Impossible to equate the eventual cost,
Liquefaction and roads the infrastructure as well,
Power and water plus sewerage that'll smell.

Emergency procedures followed here and afar,
Cordons in place for people and each car,
Churches and steeples toppled and fell,
Buried and pinned what tragedies to tell.

International support arrived to help local teams,
Death and destruction worse than it seems,
Days and weeks no power nor phone,
Thousands were isolated being shocked and alone.

Services and others all do their best,
Around the clock no time for rest,
Tired and traumatized most battled on,
Yet those after-shocks still are strong.

The entire city the suburbs as well,
Residential and business where can people dwell,
Demolishing many buildings and businesses too,
Eventually that city will be rebuilt and new.
About this poem;-
This was a massive earthquake and devastated
Christchurch and many suburbs, sadly the death
toll will be in excess of 200, plus injuries to thousands. The
after shocks are still continuing so the recovery process

will take a long time yet.

I have been writing poems for forty years and written about all sorts of things. Somehow I get creating streaks and can write up to 4 or 5 poems at once of varying subjects. I find it is a good way to record events of the day and bring history to life. The mental aspect is a balance against keeping fit, work and life in general. more…
