California Quail

Flushing up in a twittering whirr
In the scrubland to admire
The California quail walks proud
A majestic bird, there is no doubt
With its black forward-tilted head plume
Hopefully no cat will loom
The brown flanks, streaked white
At days, not visible at night
In gardens they become quite tame
If not, house cats are to blame
The coveys count more than ten
Naturally without any pen
These little birds are cute and plump
Their nest looks like a lump
In leaves and grass the egg to lie
Hopefully they will never die
