Broken Heart: Dusk

in the early days, when
we were both spellbound
and a moment apart seemed like an eternity,
the distance was unbearable.
now, you are leaving: to fulfill
the hunger for wealth and prosperity,
with no backward glances.
i wonder if i ever had a place
in your life, or if i was
merely an ornament, an amusement.
when you hold me in the dark,
do you know how the pain sears
my soul, knowledge of nevermore?
or is it something else
i cannot yet comprehend which
tears my heart to pieces and
scatters them, the fragments
indistinguishable from broken glass
along the vermillion shoreline?
