Blinded By The Light

A surprise, it was--and having surprised her the same,
He found himself on a wellcurb looking down, only
To see her lovely face in the shimmering surface
Picture--smiling, not seeing what should be--his own.
He reached down to help her up to what's left of daylight.
Through it all, she talked of present days, and verity
Was as telling in her voice as darkness enfolding.
When they were young, he knew her--too well,
As well-meaning, a wellborn...
And a twig fell, then appeared a ripple;
To his sheer delight, he saw what laid at the bottom:
Respect--reason for the call. And it was in her eyes.
And when she kissed his mother to say "good-bye,"
He wished that she would stay a bit more while...
But welladay! As she was leaving--lo!
He was blinded by the light,
Walking a few paces back behind her, misty-eyed.
