Before Thanksgiving

Neil McLeod 1947 (Oxford)

Before Thanksgiving
For David

Look I'm sorry it's been so long
It was before Thanksgiving,
But we've had so much on our minds,
I've had to make a living.

The last time that you saw me
We spoke about my brother,
“We hadn't got along.” though I've
Tried one way and another.

Yet I want to thank you
For the way you said “Don't wait!
It's best to make the effort now
Before it is too late.”

I left with thoughts of Daniel,
Determined I should find
A chance to bring him close again,
Some way warm and kind.

I dwelt upon him all that day
I really thought and tried,
But that evening I got news
My little brother had died.

We've all been devastated,
That's why it's been so long,
He took an overdose of pills
And now my brother's gone.

I don't like to hear that song
That has my brother's name,
For every time I do
Somehow I feel I am to blame.

I'm sorry I haven't seen you
I hope you'll understand,
We've had some disappointments,
Life has not gone as planned.
