Beauty Beheld

julie leyraud 1960 (USA)

Step light, listen, hear the crackle of leaves
Look around and through the trees.
Step light, listen, to the peaceful wind
What's that? a crackle again!
What must it be lerking in the tree
Behold, Thou stepped in front of me.
Bold and beautiful, though you did not see
there I stood gasping quietly at thee.
A rack mighty enough to shake the oak
fur so pure you wore as a cloak.
My eyes were in an amazed daze
As I watch you look and gently graze.
Your points of sixteen, maybe even more
that rack would look fine over my door.
But still I stayed, you walked around
while slowly I lowered my gun to the ground
True beauty my eyes did behold
Shall I again before I'm old?
