At My Core

The fire’s golden tongue
leaps at the glowing embers,
my memory holds tight
and hopes that he remembers
this time, this night
with a different kind of fire,
consuming me, feeding me
with an overpowering desire.

Without a word, with the smallest touch,
our sleepy eyes close.
We drift into careless dreams
and all the while we doze.
Awakened by his gentle hand,
I slowly lift my dizzy head,
he had to leave me, had to go
when he should’ve stayed instead.
