Another Bus Trip

My elderly aunt and I wait for the number 10 bus,
Everyone leaving Vancouver seems in a rush.
An Asian girl bumps my elderly Aunt’s cane.
“Ecuse”, she says her accent thick, her English not plain.
“They are taking over like bog plants.”
My Aunt starts her usual rant
I want to scold.
I forgive her because she is old.
My Aunt has nothing good to say
About all those Asians that seem in her way.
I help her board the number 10 bus.
The bus is full and there is no seat for us.
So we stand holding onto the rail,
My elderly Aunt looks very frail.
Just as the bus starts to leave,
That same Asian girl pulls on my sleeve.
“Cit Cit, she says pointing to her seat on the bus.
She smiles and gives up her seat for us.
Taking the seat my Aunt smiles sweetly back
And two nations come together just like that!
