Aida (Public Domain opera) Music by G. Verdi

Quest for fame and love mesh in hero's mind
Admirer knows her true rival lies near
Who half wishes for hero's fall, though kind
His blessed shield carries him through with no fear

Love's rival revealed in victory's joy
Hero drawn away spurred by tenderness
Trust reveals him to be a naive boy
Betrayal slow to come for blood's thickness

Loyalty blocks his only escape path
When he won't denounce one who let him down
That unleashes his past admirer's wrath
Entombment of once prince completes comedown

Heartsick betrayer atones as last act
Grief suffocates vengeance, air's lack ends pact
