A Walk In The Woods

I took a walk in the woods today,
I often start my morning this way.
The trail was beaten, winding and wide,
With deep ruts and tall oak trees on each side.

A long black snake is lying in the path ahead,
Asleep or perhaps maybe even dead.
No! not true, he awakes and slithers swiftly past,
He comes straight in my direction, then gone so fast.

A train whistle loud in the distance can be heard,
I catch a glimpse of a small chirping brown bird.
A tall deer stops dead in his tracks,
Then suddenly bounds away not daring to look back.

A flock of vultures soar & circle in the distance sky,
I stop a moment to ponder what the reason is, why?
Yes, nature is alive and well today in the woods,
The sights & sounds of the woods, so misunderstood.
