A Parent's Anguish - Killing Trust

Don't talk to strangers, don't even look
Don't go to dark places, not one beckoning nook
Don't take anything from others, shiny or yummy
Don't ever leave the sight of your daddy or mummy

You are a child of light and trust
but the world is full of darkness and lust
I feel torn inside, I wish I could hide
the depravities that lurk, inside masked minds

I wish I could let you grow as you are
curious, trusting, loving at heart
I wish I didn't have to instill in you, fear
to make you strong to face every ogle and leer

I brought you into this world, to make it a beautiful place
But I'm sorry, my daughter, I couldn't make it safe
For you to survive, to live and thrive
I must harden my heart, trust must die.
