A Lonely Road

Long have I wandered lonely roads,
O'erburdened with the gloomy thought
Of those with naught to seek in life,
And those who ne'er have anything sought.
Of those who wonder o'er things gone;
Of lovers lost; of battles fought.
We travel roads one and the same,
But lost in them, we know it not.

Bleak and dreary is that path,
Which ne'er the moon or stars have known.
But dusk 'till dusk I travel it,
For bound, am I, with chain and stone
On which her wishes fate has sealed:
E'er to plod and vainly moan,
And destined through the desolate fog
To be the one that goes alone.
