A Lingering Sense Of Sunshine Fills The Days

and coats the ways down which we pass
into a place of increasing light,

its rays spread out above those paths
that wind along those lands to come,

where lightly tread those future feet
that mark the moment from the moment,

span an everlasting plain
and softly walk with unchanged pace

along the fading margin of the will-have-been.

The dream will then be real, that hazy
kingdom of the unforeseen,

the yet-to-be that stretches shapeless
out, the shadow thrown by sun

forever at our backs and pointing
always toward the same long land,

regardless of each walker’s turnings in the wind.

Such unknown shapes as rise to view
will rise unshadowed there as here,

so much at least is surely known,
whatever eyes may witness or

whatever lies beneath the warmth of foot-felt ways.

No shadow need be raised save shadows
cleanly sown by cleansing suns

and still, a lingering sense of sunshine fills the days.
