10:44 p.m. Wednesday Evening
The dog jumps up from a deep sleep
and with a low growl, announces to no-one in particular,
her presence.
As if anyone could forget for a moment, while she slept,
that she even existed.
As if anyone for one moment, could erase her noble face
from their memory.
As if someone, for one moment, may have forgotten that she,
and no-one else, was standing guard, protecting all that was sacred.
She closes her eyes, and curls herself into a tight ball.
She knows she can go back to sleep, mission accomplished.
She will rest well, knowing now
that her dignified presence is immortalized within my poem.
