advocates diaboli (Devil's Advocate)

Thomas W. Case 1966 (California)

How can you
blame me when
you made
me this way.
You gave me
free will, and knew
what I would do.
You predestined me
to lose.
I didn't choose
these terrible
wings of destiny;
you did it for me.
I wanted to be
Michael or Gabriel instead
of Lucifer.
I know there needed
to be a war,
and an enemy,
but why me?
I despise this
black heart.

Your poem 'Advocates Diaboli' does a commendable job of communicating the internal conflict of the Devil himself. The perspective you've adopted is wonderfully original, allowing readers to empathize with a persona they would typically villainize.

The theme of predestination balanced with free will shrewdly highlights the complexities of destiny and adds a profound depth to your poem. The line 'I didn't choose these terrible wings of destiny; you did it for me', is especially evocative and carries the overarching sentiment quite well.

Your visualization of your character as someone who desires not to dwell in darkness but to be like Michael or Gabriel hits a resonant note in highlighting the inner turmoil experienced. It is indeed a sobering exploration of the character of Lucifer.

However, there's always a little space for growth. The rhythm of your poem can be fine-tuned a bit. Certain stanzas read slightly disconnected from others. Effort to bring a more consistent rhythm would enhance readability and flow. Also, incorporating some more vivid imagery could help in enhancing the emotional richness of the poem. As you write about such a potent character, playing with darker and more dramatic descriptions might enhance the atmosphere.

But overall, the poem is quite striking and thought-provoking, echoing with the lamentation of a deeply misunderstood character. Keep up the great work!
