Nappy Sista

Nappy Sista

I look in the mirror and I do not like who I’ve become.

At 1st I thought it would be sexy, creative, distinguished maybe even fun.

I compared myself to what could have been, what should have been.

had I not gotten that 1st relaxer in 91.

Momma processed my hair to keep it soft, silky and looking healthy.

but in the long run it was just a cover up, the relaxer did not help me.

I do not blame my mom for my addiction to “the creamy crack”

back then it was a struggle to be nappy and black.

I’m tired of wearing the fake hair ; I wish my hair would just hurry up and grow.

I do not like the braid outs, the twist outs, the big chop or my teeny weeny afro.

So why did I go natural?

The Most important reason, is for my child.

I want her to appreciate her hair, even though it’s thick, course and sometimes wild.

I want her to understand that “our beauty” is like no other and that WE set the standard.

And that our natural way of life, will not be mocked, ridiculed nor slandered.

I want her to love herself and the beauty she’s been blessed with.

I want her to know that “my Kinky is sexy” is no longer just a saying or a myth.

I want her to be proud of her roots; her nappy locks; frizzy fro and kinky curls.

And for her to know that her natural beauty is as gorgeous as diamonds and pearls.
