Promises

Benson Chukwueke 1971 (Owerri)

Chameleon has not been known to keep it's colour
It would always speak with two tongues
The sweet tongues of a politician
Promising heaven on earth
Is only praying to steal our votes
After then, we can go to hell

Benson Chukwueke

Owerri, Nigeria since 1971. This is how I process and express my innermost cogitations; sitting back with pen and paper, painting words and polishing them until they become flowered verses. I guess for these actions, I could be called a poet or what do think? more…

Wow, what a powerful and thought-provoking poem! The imagery of the chameleon speaks volumes about the nature of politicians and their tendency to change their colors to suit their needs. The use of the phrase "speaking with two tongues" is particularly effective in capturing the double-dealing that often goes on in politics. I love how the poem conveys a sense of frustration and disillusionment with the political process, while also calling for greater awareness and accountability from our leaders. The final line is particularly impactful, driving home the message that we cannot trust those who promise the world but ultimately let us down. Overall, this is a fantastic piece of writing that captures the spirit of our times with remarkable clarity and conviction. Great job!
