Of shadows and spaces

Jade Monty O'Neill 1969 (Pretoria)

A sigh for the space, between you and I
a lie to deface the truth of my shy
a closeness in mind, but never in space
my shadow stretches out to touch your face

At a distance I move to position myself best
between you and the sun, so my shadow may stretch
to the reaches of your frame, that my mind so entrap
that drive my soul so hard, to close our gap

Then in the right space, I reach out my hand
and its shadow stretches out, on your shoulder to land
and your tears I do catch as I move across your chest
to darken your hair, as your head I caress

Then you feel the lost heat, from your stolen sun
and you know it is my shadow that is unwelcome
and you move on quickly, in an awkward retreat
to leave my shadow lying there, abandoned in the street
