Dusk

Raja Ghoshal 1974 (New Delhi)

The cows have all gone home, if they have one
The sky is smeared with vermilion abandon
The Mynah bird is finally tired of her own chatter and goes for a slumber
Street lights come into their own, as if after a day of idle gossip
A temple bell rings, a candle flickers
A child finally finds the time to play on the wet ground

Every dusk has a story
Of the ruthless journey of the day
Every dusk has a promise
Of a night of tranquil sleep
Every Dusk has a poem
A pause in the endless time game
Every Dusk has a lover
Waiting forever in the dark!
