Monster Under My Bed

Wendy Rose 1970 (Victoria)

There is a monster under my bed

There is a monster behind the door

I saw a shadow at my window

Look just there - it crossed the floor

Please don’t make me turn the light out

Please don’t leave me all alone

I’m not safe - I know they’re watching

With sharp teeth and knives of bone

I tremble - covers pulled up tightly

Scarcely brave enough to breathe

As the last tear rolls down slowly

And my thoughts all turn to dreams

Then the sun peeks through the curtains

Magpies warble, sparrows sing

All thought of monsters now forgotten

Replaced by what the day may bring

Fear can often paralyse us

And make us blind to possibilities

It whispers doom and devastation

But it is just a lion with no teeth

So stand with proud determination

Take the risk and face that dread

And if you really need to

Have one more look under the bed
