From the ashes
Joseph Mark Carbonell 1994 (Oregon)
I rose from the ashes of the past like a phoenix on fire, even though I was surrounded by violence I aspired to be something greater as my heart was burning on a pyre.
I felt mired in quilt of guilt but I looked to history to inspire then I flew even higher. I began to develop conscious thought, became inspired by writers.
Picked up a pen and began to write about the struggles of my life. The fight of the mind against the senselessness of the times, wrote about my philosophy of the divines.
I learned how to rhyme, then I started to climb in the reality of mine.
