12 Days of Purgatory

We sat in the backseat just my sister and me
Rocking a bland beat on our way to Lake Erie
Comatose ‘cos the song’s so dumb
Please Mom, she’s chewing up her thumb
Can’t stop singing it
Can’t believe that’s a hit.

Oh look! That billboard says society has a disease
The burned flesh of war polluting the breeze?
Can we still swim or is this the last breath
From the Lake before the rot of death?
Gone fishing with Dad

I languish with my girlfriends bemoaning how I got so fat
Imagine the yellow submarine bloody this or that
I find myself afloat in enemy waters
Mother warned I must not engage
And, I am her liege

Summer’s through and we have our assignments
There was such an uproar over John Lennon
Melting vinyl in a shower  upon the wind
I dragged myself to school at dawn
I can’t stop singing it
I can’t stop singing it
