The War Inside

I fell by a tree; alone and inept
Feeling overwhelmed and tragically swept
My sanity removed without my control
Left with no conscience, no emotion, no soul

Clenching my weapon, quivering in despair
Blood on my uniform; bits of flesh in my hair
Many lives extinguished by mines where they stepped
I fell by a tree; I trembled and wept

I fell by a tree where nature once slept
Futile to find reason, infeasible to accept
Fierce and unyielding, this long bitter war
Has taken my confidence but demands a lot more

Desperate for safety and comfort again
Exhausted by unrelenting anxiety within
Feeling overwhelmed and tragically swept
I fell by a tree; alone and inept
