Breathless

There is an anvil
On top of my chest
Most people don’t see it
But it’s still always there

It crushes my heart and
Takes the breath from my lungs
I gasp for air and
Feel the rush in my blood

It’s hard to wake up and
Be a human sometimes
It feels like my body
Might suddenly crack

Sometimes it feels lighter
And I can actually stand
But then all of a sudden
It comes crashing back down

My ribs snap in half
And pain floods my bones
There’s tears in my eyes
And you ask me, "What’s wrong?"

How can I explain
That the pain that I feel
Is sudden and strange
And impossible to heal

I’m happy today
Content and fulfilled
Yet the weight in my chest
Won’t let me feel real

There is an anvil
On top of my chest
Most people can’t see it
But I know it’s still there
