Light

Reaching for the light
Just above the surface of the water
But the weight of oceans crushes around you

Red wine, cigarettes and whiskey
Float you for a while
Before they put weights on your ankles
and drag you further into the depths

All the while you reach for that light,
just above the surface.

It's so close, just a little further and you're there,
So close to that breath of fresh air
You've struggled so hard to taste it on your lips,
But the smallest, mistimed stroke and you sink back, floating in the comfort of the dark. Always looking up at the light.
