They called me out of my true name

Daniel Millard 1976 (Medford, OR)

I have grown into being thankful for all the times I was spat upon, had drinks thrown on me, choked, and called faggot.  It opened me up to the suffering of others.  It showed me that they were not speaking to who I am.  It showed me that it spoke of who they were in those moments.  It shattered me at the time.  I didn’t always have other people stand up for me or protect me.  In fact many times people stood by and just watched it happen.  So now I try to stand up, speak up, when others are called out of their true names.  We are all created from the same Source of Love.  May we come to see one another in the true Light of brotherhood.

What a beautiful and heartwrenching piece... to recognize that a bully is lacking in love is a mark of an evolved human.

It is so painful to read this poem and to picture a perfect, beautiful, little boy, shattered and alone. And yet, as the poem acknowledges, that shattering is often exactly what opens our hearts to the humanity and suffering of others; that schools us in the importance of seeing and speaking only what is most true.
