2020/12/05 ~ America's Unheard Million

Cheyenne Seaman 2003 (Philadelphia)

Dashed upon the rocks,
   drowning far from sea,
America's unheard million
   make their silent plea.

A needle's in his arm.
   He's shooting up another line.
Just to escape the pain,
   he's always living for another high.

Turned away from door to door,
    now livin' in the streets;
Kicked out from her home,
   there goes another pregnant teen.

He's fighting day-to-day
   against abusive guardians.
Hiding back in the dark
   is America's unheard million.

She's got a bottle in her hand,
   another in the other.
She's got bright red lipstick on,
   being sold out by someone's brother.

Bloodied fists, blackened eyes,
    their making street-friend ties.
America's unheard million
   are just barely scraping by.

Cardboard boxes turned into homes,
   darkened nights and feeling alone;
America's unheard million speak out,
   their words chillin' to the bone.

Torrential rains, blizzard snow;
   searching for help wherever they go.
The unheard million are searching
   for warmth and love to know.
