What I’d Like to Know

Recall if you will, Cecil, a lion that lived primarily in the Hwange National Park in Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe. Cecil was killed by Walter Palmer, an American recreational big-game hunter. Cecil was 13 years old when killed by Palmer in July of 2015. I was mortified by the reports of this lion being killed by this hunter. I immediately took to writing this poem on the behalf of Cecil and his family.

What I'd Like To Know
by Dance Of The Poet's Pen

On safari
In a far off land
A beauty there
You’ll never understand

You’re a sportsman
A hunter in the wild
Your sights on target
Pull the trigger with a smile

Now a Lioness
With fatherless cubs
But you’re satisfied
As the ground senses a thud

The trophy on your wall
A fierce Lion’s head
May it haunt you at night
As you lay in bed

A nightmare of giant paws
Slashing through your flesh
Vengeful teeth upon your throat
Guilt of your own request

And who hears your cries for help
As the hunter becomes the prey
Does God hear you when
For his mercy you pray

Is the wild kingdom
Now a better place
And does the loss of one Lion
Show upon your face

One question of you
What I’d like to know
Is who gave you the right
To cause innocent blood to flow

DanceOfThePoet'sPen

Guess you could say I'm a self taught poet. I started writing poetry as a means of dealing with the emotions of finding my Birthmother's obituary and grave site after searching for 10 years. I continued writing and over the course of the last 20 years I've become comfortable in how I write. You'll notice I tend to write a lot about nostalgia and old memories. Hey, when you round the corner of 60 years, you start thinking a lot about the past and where you've been. One of my subjects I write about is love, but I try to write of other things too. I've lived on the south shore of Massachusetts for all of my 64 years. But I love all of New England. Aside from writing poetry, I also love photography and have quite a collection of old antique cameras. Baseball, football, muscle cars and car shows are also some of my interests. Not too crazy about Winter. Spring & Summer are my favorite seasons. more…
