My son, My Heart

Does he know the small life details that I'm still learning today?
Frightened that he's struggling to find his way.
I rack my brain, fold my hands and pray
I want him to succeed and live a full life, but
I feel I have failed most every night.

Drugs define him and occupy his mind
I can't fight the demons he keeps at his side.
Addiction has hold and he loves the thrill,
I try to help but to no avail.
I worry he won't wake up, but he says that won't happen.
He tries to hide his sadness, he kisses me, laughing.
I worry that he's always running, the cops at his heels.
He things he's smarter, as he makes his deals.
He's clever but naïve and he'll eventually succumb
to the realities of life and what will come.
